I live in an old building, and I'm still adjusting to a gas stove. I want to the top of the stove clean, and with a cloth and hot water, does not seem to be the case. All my cleaning (especially Scrubbing Bubbles, which is normally used to say non-fat dry messes up on my stove): "Do not use near open flames." I support the idea of using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. These things are unbelievable! I have an old gas stove in my house. Usually Dampen a sponge (or "Magic Eraser"), and a spray cleaner and wipe the surface. This usually means the thing.
Just Out shot the pilot. There is very little gas by the pilot and the time needed to clean the leak is not enough gas in the room to do damage. Pilot lights go out for one reason or another for many years and many have not detected leaks and day without incident. Simply press ignite the flame and when you're done.
If you clean the best, take care not for the pilots.
